Tragedy struck a Florida family last year when a fifteen-month old baby wandered outside the house and drowned in an unsecured backyard swimming pool. Unfortunately, as the summer pool season heats up this year, the child will be joined by countless others who die in preventable pool drowning.

Over the holidays I had a chance to finish reading the #1 New York Times Bestseller (2005), “Freakonomics”. The book studies the riddles of everyday life. Question like: Which is more dangerous, a gun or a swimming pool? What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common? How much do parents really matter?
Looking at the numbers, the likelihood of death by pool (1 in 11,000) versus death by gun (1 in 1 million-plus) isn’t even close. Children under the age of ten are far more likely to die in a swimming accident that by guns.
We were fortunate to grow up with swimming pools and truly appreciate how much fun they can be, especially on a hot summer day. Having said this, we want our clients to know that swimming pools can be very dangerous and care must be taken to avoid injury and drowning.
